Bestwood
St Philip

History

The church of St Philip was built in 1976 and is located in Top Valley, Bestwood.

In December 1995, it was awarded a grant of £40,000 from the National Lottery to extend its building and facilitate a greater provision for care of the community. The extension was dedicated by the Bishop of Southwell on 13 October 1996.

In 2009, the congregation was joined by that of its sister church, St Matthew on the Hill, following an arson attack which closed the latter building.

In 2011 the bell from the tower was stolen. Easter worship was welcomed in this year by the ringing of handbells.

Like St Matthew on the Hill, St Philip’s maintains a strong commitment to serving the needs of the local community. In addition to providing a meeting space for a range of organisations and groups, in 2016 the church functioned as the headquarters for the Bestwood and Bulwell Foodbank.
