North Aisle

The memorials at the west end of the north aisle to the three Darwin children who died at 13, 14 and 15 years of age were sculpted by Thomas Tyley of Bristol (born 1789). There was a big demand for religious monuments in the 19th century and Tyley was a leading marble sculptor in Bristol. The one to Jane Eleanor Darwin on the south wall is set into a decorative sarcophagus and is surmounted by an urn with flowers, over which is a dove carrying a lily. On the west wall, the one to William Waring Darwin has a decorative urn over the inscription and two angels holding a crown above.  The one to Elizabeth has fluted columns flanking the inscription and is surmounted by a well sculpted seated woman.

16.

THE REMAINS OF JANE ELEANOR DARWIN, THE SECOND DAUGHTER OF
WILLIAM BROWN DARWIN AND ELIZABETH HIS WIFE
SHE DIED OF LINGERING CONSUMPTION
THE 26TH DECEMBER 1838, AGED 14 YEARS AND 8 MONTHS

WE WEPT AROUND HER EARLY BIER
WHILST SHE WAS SAFE ON HIGH
IN REALMS UNSULLIED BY A TEAR
UNCONSCIOUS OF A SIGH
WE WEPT, WHILE SAINTED CHOIRS ABOVE
WERE CHIDING EACH DELAY:
A BROTHER’S AND A SISTER’S LOVE
WERE CALLING HER AWAY.
“UNLOOSE”, SHE CRIED, “EACH EARTHLY TIE,
 “NOR WEEP RELEASE FROM WOE,
“TO THEIR BRIGHT MANSION IN THE SKY,
 “BID MY FREED SPIRIT GO”.
TO THAT BLESSED SPIRIT WHAT BUT PEACE
COULD HEAV’N’S LAST SUMMONS BRING?
“O GRAVE , THY VAUNTED TRIUMPHS CEASE !
“O DEATH, WHERE IS THY STING?

17.

AS A TRIBUTE OF THE DEEPEST SORROW
THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED TO THE MEMORY OF ELIZABETH
THE ELDEST DAUGHTER OF
WILLIAM BROWN DARWIN AND ELIZABETH HIS WIFE
SHE DIED AT BATH 5TH MAY 1835, AGED 15 YEARS
AFTER A RAPID AND MOST PAINFUL ILLNESS

SHE WAS A FONDLY LOVED AND MOST DUTIFUL CHILD
GENTLE AND AMIABLE IN HER DISPOSITION
HAPPY TO RECEIVE PLEASURE AND MORE HAPPY TO IMPART IT
SHE ALONE WAS UNCONSCIOUS OF HER SUPERIOR MERIT

THE DISEASE TO WHICH SHE FELL A VICTIM
AND THE SUBMISSIVE PIETY WHICH PREPARED HER WAY TO HEAVEN
TAUGHT HER MUCH AFFLICTED PARENTS THE DUTY OF RESIGNATION.

ALAS: TOO PERISHABLE MEMORIAL OF HER
WHOSE VIRTUES ONCE STREWED THE PATH OF LIFE WITH HAPPINESS
HENCEFORTH THEY CAN ONLY BE THE RICH SOLACE OF PENSIVE MEMORY

THE MERCY OF HEAVEN BRIGHTENS THE PROSPECT OF IMMORTAL LIFE
WITH THE HOPE OF THAT BLISSFUL REUNION
WHERE SEPARATION AND SORROW SHALL FOR EVER CEASE.

TO PARENTS WHO THE MORE DEEPLY
DEPLORE HIS LOSS.
