There were four bells in the tower when lightning struck in September 1893. A report on the disaster in the Sheffield Independent of 25 September 1893 provides some information on the bells:

'The upper of the two floors [of the tower] contained four bells, two of the year 1609, and the other two of a considerably earlier date. Not only was the framework burnt to a cinder, but the whole of the four bells themselves were broken into fragments.'
