Nottingham St Mark

Features and Fittings

The font, now
at Colwick church

Font

The font and altar rails are the only fittings that are known still to exist, having been removed to the church of St John the Baptist, Colwick. The font is cut from limestone and has an octagonal chamfered plinth, which supports an octagonal shaft. On each of the angles projects a carving of leaves and berries. The bowl is likewise octagonal decorated with an incised panel containing a squared quartrefoil on each face, in the centre of which there is a carved foliated boss. The top edge of the bowl is decorated with dentille work. A wooden cover with a central finial finishes the font. This cover looks to be more recent and may not have originated at St Mark’s.

Altar Rails

These were also taken to Colwick Church, where they are sill in use in 2011.

Pulpit

The post 1927 photograph of the church interior shows a light coloured, ornately carved pulpit located in front of the chancel arch on the north side of the nave. The image is not clear enough to show the details. Whilst it appears to be made of stone, a report in the Nottingham Argus 1896 states that the pulpit was wood.

Nave seating

Dark stained wood with low shaped ends and book rests.

Lectern

A brass eagle lectern was located centrally just to the rear of the chancel arch.

Lighting

Until 1927 the church was lit by gas. Two gas brackets stood in the chancel secured to the east ends of the choir stalls.

Furniture

An oak chair was purchased for the sanctuary in 1886.
