War Memorial

Detail of inscriptions

The war memorial in the churchyard was erected in memory of the men of the parish who lost their lives in the First World War. It is made of grey granite and was designed by A. H. Borrowdale of Worksop and unveiled on 18 July 1920 by Colonel Henry Mellish of Hodsock Priory.

The front panel of plinth has an inscription that states:

GREAT WAR 1914-1919.
THIS COLUMN WAS ERECTED BY
THE PEOPLE OF OLDCOTES,
IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN,
ALAN C. GROUNDS YORKS REGT.
DIED DEC 7TH 1915 AGED 20.
FREDK. WOODWARD D. OF WELL REGT.
DROWNED DEC 31ST 1915 AGED 18.
GEO. H. KIPLING LEICESTER REGT.
DIED MARCH 24TH 1918 AGED 20.
GEO. W. MARSHALL S. STAFFS REGT.
DIED MAY 3RD 1918 AGED 22.
“GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN
THAN THIS.”

On the steps below the plinth is a stone flower holder with an inscription reading:

MEMORY OF
SGT. N. BETTS.
R.A.F.
AGED 24 YRS.
MALTA 1954.
