Retford (Ordsall) St Alban

Organ

The rector of Ordsall, the Rev Dr W.S. Stott, bought the organ from Lady Hay for £160 in 1903. It had been built around 50 years before by Bishop & Sons of London and installed in her London home. At this point it had the following stops:- Great Organ – Open Diapason, Hohl Flute, Dolce C., Lieblich Bourdon, Rohr Flute, Viol-di-Gamba, Vox Celestes, Viola, Harmonic Piccolo, Oboe, Tremulant: Choir Organ, - Sub-Bass, Lieblich Bourdon, Violoncello: six Coupler and had five Composition Pedals. It was housed in a loft at St Alban’s and in 1904 a carved oak front was added. Once the Church had been extended in 1912-13 it became apparent that the organ was not powerful enough.

In 1926 Brindley & Co. of Sheffield thoroughly cleaned the organ at a cost of £65. A new Open Diapason was added on the Great Organ at a cost of £112 and a new Trumpet in the swell at a cost of £108 was also added.

The blower was converted to electricity in 1932.

It was completely overhauled and rebuilt in 1957 by Nelson and Co. of Durham. As a result the church had an organ with 7 great organ stops, 9 swell organ stops and 5 pedal organ stops.
