Bells

Bells Old bell frame truss

The remains of a very early bell-frame Elphick 'H', Pickford Group 1. variant viii, form bell frame, perhaps dating to the 13th century, survive in the Bell Chamber, among a handful of such frames known nationally.

In 1551 the church had ‘4 belles, a lyttyl bell and 2 hand belles’. Four bells are recorded in a list of furnishings in 1786. In 1824-5 the four bells were re-cast and a fifth one added. These five bells were all recast in 1922 by John Taylor and Co., Loughborough, when a further one was added and a new steel bell-frame constructed. Finally two new bells were hung in 1931 to make a ring of eight. The Tenor bell in G weighs 12 cwt 1 stone 11 lbs (627 kg.)
