Danethorpe
Church

Archaeology

There have been frequent finds of Roman material in the area, including human remains, coffins, and pottery, more especially adjacent to the Fosse Way which lies only a short distance from the medieval village site.

Given the historical descriptions of ‘Chapel Close’ and human bones being discovered in the early 19th century in ‘a garden which was the burial ground’, the most likely position for the former church would appear to be the buildings called ‘Danethorpe’ that lie on Norwell Lane, approximately 750m to the north-east of the supposed position of the deserted medieval village. Detailed investigation would be required to test this hypothesis.
