Hawksworth St Mary and All Saints

War Memorial

Money was raised from the village to provide a marble tablet in memory of George Howard from the village and of Albert Roland and William Alfred Kerridge, sons of the rector of Hawksworth and his wife, the Revd Albert and Mrs Evangeline Kerridge, who lost their lives during World War I. Albert Roland Kerridge was interred in the churchyard.

In the nave, on the north side of the chancel arch, the square marble tablet is inscribed:

LANCE CORPL GEORGE HOWARD,
YORK & LANCASTER REGT,
KILLED IN ACTION AT HOOGE, FRANCE,
9TH AUGST 1915, AGED 37 YEARS.
PREVIOUSLY SERVED IN IMPERIAL
YEOMANRY IN S. AFRICA & IN INDIA.

AND PTE WILLIAM ALFRED KERRIDGE,
DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY.
REPORTED MISSING 9/10 SEPTEMBER 1918,
FORMERLY IN ARMY SERVICE CORPS.

ALSO PTE ALBERT ROLAND KERRIDGE,
NORFOLK REGT, PRISONER OF WAR MARCH TO NOVEMBER 1918,
DIED, AS A RESULT OF STARVATION WHILE PRISONER,
IN HOSPITAL IN LONDON MARCH 18TH 1919.
