Newark Christ Church

Archaeology

The church from the

Foundation stone
in the porch laid on
1 December 1956

The building is of traditional design with a gabled roof, completed in light brown brick.

It consists of a nave, north and south transepts, chancel, north aisle, west porch, and vestry.

The architects were Broadhead and Royle of Nottingham and the church was constructed over the period 1956-58.

In 1921 the site of the church was agricultural land lying just to the south-west of the Newark Union Workhouse; in 1886 it was also on agricultural land and the Workhouse was the Newark Union Infirmary, there was a ropewalk just to the east. The archaeological potential of the pre-church site is unknown and there have been no known archaeological excavations.
