The east window |
Pevsner refers to a 14th century fragment of stained glass in the south aisle
east window. Neville Truman gives more detail. "In quatrefoil tracery light,
with new white surround, a female saint. In greyish shading and matt, crowned
with a three pointed yellow stain crown, long yellow hair down back, tight sleeves
to the wrist with yellow border there at and a hooded cloak with yellow border
round the low circular neck, white halo." Sir Stephen Glynne in 1862 writing
of the window states, "At the east of the south aisle is a good Decorated window
of three lights containing some pieces of old stained glass - the hood on grotesque
head corbels. Some other windows of the south aisle are Decorated of two lights
- one square headed." The lower part of the east window of the south aisle
was erected in 1958 by Pope and Parr and donated by the Hardstaff family.
