SACRED AUTHORESS OF AN IMPROVED MUSICAL NOTATION |
The ‘improved musical notation’ of Mary Cooper was a system in which every semitone had its own line space, thus removing all sharps and flats, but whether this was an improvement is open to question: it did not catch on!
An inscription on the black backing slab makes it clear that the monument is by Hall & Co of Lenton Boulevard, Nottingham.
Wall monument to John Hall Clay and his son |
Accompanying floor brass |
Near this place are deposited the Mortal remains of the Reverend JOHN HALL CLAY, M.A. of Queens College Cambridge, Vicar of Oxton and Blidworth, and for some years resident in this Parish, who departed this life Septr 6th 1822, aged 53. Sincerely lamented by all who knew him, and more particularly by the Poor to whom his heart and hand were ever open. His only Son JOHN CLAY Esqr late of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, Survived him little more than one short month, departing this life October 9th 1822, in the 23rd Year of his Age at Malling Deanery in Sussex, and was conveyed here to be interred by the side of a beloved and affectionate Father his filial attention to whom was the cause of his premature death. If every promise of future excellence, the dawn of every rising virtue, could have warded off the dart of death, this estimable youth would have been longer spared to his afflicted and Widowed Mother, but the ways of Providence are equally inscrutable and wise |
Accompanying brass in floor:
In the Vault beneath lie the Remains LIKEWISE |
The monuments formerly on the walls of the nave have all been removed to the west wall.

IN MEMORY OF
|
SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF SIR JOHN COAPE SHERBROOKE, GENERAL IN THE ARMY, COLONEL OF THE 33D. REGT. OF FOOT, AND KNIGHT GRAND CROSS OF THE MOST HONOURABLE MILITARY ORDER OF THE BATH. HE DIED ON THE 14TH. OF FEBRUARY 1830, AGED 65 YEARS. HIS REMAINS ARE DEPOSITED IN THE FAMILY VAULT AT OXTON, IN THIS COUNTY. |
Although no mention is made of the fact on his memorial, Sir John Coape Sherbrooke, a veteran of the Peninsula War, who was for many years resident in Calverton, was also Governor General of Canada, 1816 to 1818, and the city and county of Sherbrooke are named after him.
A small wooden-mounted metal plaque reads:
IN MEMORY OF THOMAS O. HOYLE M.A. FAITHFUL SERVANT OF THIS PARISH THE VICAR FOR 30 YEARS 1956-86 "YE ARE NOT YOUR OWN YE ARE BOUGHT WITH A PRICE." |
(The scriptual quotation comes from 1 Corinthians 6.19,20.)
Below the memorial to the Rev Mr Hoyle is another brass plate reading:
TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN REMEMBRANCE OF CHARLES PERCY SMITH, M.A., VICAR OF CALVERTON 1905-1911 “The work of Righteousness shall be Peace.” ISAIAH XXXII,17 ERECTED BY THE GUILD OF CHURCH WORKERS. |
Built into the south wall of the chancel is a tablet to Mrs Jane Pepper recording her benefactions to the Church and Parish:
UNDER THIS MONUMENT CLOSE BY THIS Wall, LIETH YE BODY OF MISTRIS Jane Pepper; INTERRED YE 17TH DAY OF JANUARY Anno Domi 1686/7 WHO gave UNTO THE POOR OF Calverton all her HER PART of YE CHURCH CLOSE IN Calverton FOREVER & a Silver Plate also, TO YE PARISH CHURCH thereof. |
The slighly strange date for the interment of her body, viz 17th January 1686/7 is a reminder that until 1752 when England adopted the Gregorian Calendar, the year began on March 25th, not January 1st. In England until 1752 events taking place between January 1st and March 25th were sometimes dated in both years – as we find here on Mrs Jane Pepper’s memorial.
Her donation is also mentioned on the Charity Board in the church.
Near the eastern end of the south nave wall is a plaque which reads:
IN AFFECTIONATE MEMORY OF FRANK EVELYN SEELY T.D. 1824 BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN HEART MATT. v 3 1928 |
His father, Sir Charles Seely, had been a great benefactor to the parish, which presented him with an illuminated address, now to be found in the Calverton Museum.
Immediately below the memorial to Frank Evelyn Seely is another plaque. This commemorates two women whose surname is not given on the plaque, but by its placing on the wall it must refer to the plaque above. It reads:
Also remembered with affection by their children and grandchildren and their friends in Calverton his wife LEILA ELIZMA 1876-1903 and his second wife GETRUDE FANNY 1883-1967 Their children rise up and call them blessed |
