War Memorial

Crimean War Headstone

Researchers Hughes and Trigg referencing a stone in this graveyard (as an example) when they concluded that participation in the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava was something that was considered of great acclaim until long after the event. There being many memorials reveal the desire of former soldiers and their families to record their glory in this and other battles. In this case they noted the poem which was clearly based on Tennyson’s Charge of the Light Brigade, with significant differences:

In Memory of
William Bacon, a native of this parish
who fell in the Battle Octr. 25th 1854.
Aged 30 Years

And George Broome, his Brother in law:
who met a Soldier's Death at the same time and place.
Aged 35 Years.

They were privates in the 17th Lancers,
and fell in the Death Ride of Balaklava:-

John Bacon their Brother (of the same Regiment)
escaped unhurt from the same Desperate Charge.

"Charge" was the Captain's cry:
Theirs not to make reply
Theirs but to do or die:
Into the Valley of Death
Rode the Six Hundred.

Honour the Brave and Bold!
Long shall the Tale be told
Yea, when our Babes are old.
Holy they rode onward.

"Thou hast girded we with strength unto he Battle"

The cross in the churchyard consists of an elaborate crucifix with octagonal shaft, small octagonal plinth and two stepped base. The war memorial commemorates the men, and one woman, from Collingham who served and died during the First World War. It was designed by Clement William Jewett (1870-1956) and was unveiled by Lt Col W Coape-Oates on 30 November 1919. The names of those who died in the Second World War have been added.
