Excavations and potential for survival of below-ground archaeology

No archaeological excavations have taken place. Major restorations in the C17th and C19th will have caused extensive disturbance to medieval stratigraphy, but the base of the west tower reveals apparently earlier footings, possibly belonging to a pre-C13th building.

The overall potential for the survival of below-ground archaeology in the churchyard is considered moderate and below the present interior floors is considered to be moderate.

Exterior:Burials expected, multiperiod. Areas surrounding building, especially the nave will be disturbed by C17th and C19th restoration, although some medieval stratigraphy is expected to survive.

Interior:Extent of C17th and C19th disturbance is unknown, though C17th is expected to be extensive. There is unknown survival of earlier deposits

Walls:Mixture of C13th-C17th, and C19th restoration.
