Church of All Saints

Grade I

Church. On a pre-conquest site, C12 fragments, predominantly C13 and C14, reduced in size and restored circa 1777 and restored again in 1888. Thinly coursed rubble, north side of chancel rendered. Slate roofs. West tower, 3-bay nave with north and south porches and chancel. The square, 4-stage tower has broad clasping buttresses to the 1st stage and a single lancet west window. In the 2nd stage are 2 small round-headed Norman windows. 2-light, Y-tracery bell- chamber openings to the 3rd stage. A deep frieze with an ornamental band, crenellated parapet with gargoyles and corner pinnacles forms the Perpendicular top stage. Within the 1958 south porch is a C13 Early English heavily moulded doorway. To the right of this is a Perpendicular 3-light window. The chancel south side has two decorated windows of 2 and 3 lights the latter with trefoils and quatrefoils in the head. The 3-light Decorated east window is of 1888. Restored 2-light windows with Decorated tracery on north side of nave, a third window is obscured by the north porch. Interior: the C14 north arcade is now in the north wall and has double- chamfered arches on octagonal piers with moulded capitals and demi-column responds. Masks form the intersection of the arches. The double- chamfered tower arch, circa 1250, has circular responds with moulded capitals, and the double-chamfered C13 chancel arch has octagonal responds. The nave roof is arch-braced with big moulded tie-beams. Two piscinas and an aumbry on the south side. The C19 font is apparently using an inverted C14 font as a pedestal. Octagonal oak-panelled pulpit dated 1629. Poppy-head bench ends with details of animals, reptiles, grotesque heads and one with a merman and a mermaid. N Pevsner. The Buildings of England, 1979.

Headstones. Mainly C18. Mainly slate. 1. Rectangular with flowing decoration, to: Benjamin Levesten d.1779. 2. Large with relief-faced winged angel (defaced), divided vertically, to: James son of Benjamin Lievesley d.1724. Also Benjamin Lievesley of Sutton d.1724. 3. Taller, with shaped head, finely detailed, to: Benjamin son of Benjamin and Sarah Lievesley. 4. Similar to above, to: Ann daughter of Benjamin and Sarah Lievesley d.1792. 5. Tiny, with round-faced winged angel, to: Sarah wife of Benjamin Lievely d.Jan 21st 1721 aged 50 years. 6. Limestone, small with shaped top and raised letters (a verse) on one side and an oval panel on the other side. Illegible probably early C18. 7. Rectangular with diaper pattern, to: William Newbray d.1769. 8. Rectangular with moulded surround, to: Alice Newbray d.1747. 9. Incised face in each top corner, to: Martin Newbray d.1741. 10. Plain, to: Ambrose Newbere of Sutton, the husband of Elizabeth Newbere d.1719, also Elizabeth Newbere d.1719. 11. Tall, with shaped top and fine decoration, to: George Harrison son of John and Elizabeth Harrison d.1786. 12. Tall, shaped, with relief vase in oval and classical detail, to: Elizabeth the wife of John Harrison d.1776. 13. Tall, shaped, classical with fine details of flowers etc. In the head a relief globe with a serpent, to: John Harrison d.1783. 14. Fine foliage with central relief cherubs head, to: Alice the wife of William Harrison d.1779. 15. Tall, shaped, classical, to: Elizabeth daughter of Edmund and Martha Roubotham d.1800. Signed Wood, Bingham. 16. Rectangular, with 2 round-faced winged angels and raised letters, to: William Orston Senior d.1728 aged 81 years, followed by a verse in raised letters. Also, to: Sarah, daughter of William Orston by Elizabeth his wife, it died in infancy. An excellent example of the type. 17. Small, with round-faced winged angel, to: Elizabeth wife of William Orston d.1719. 18. Small with round-faced winged angel, to: Elizabeth wife of John Chittle of Bingham and daughter of William Orston of this town d.1721. 19. (10 metres south of east end of chancel). Rectangular with round-faced winged angel, to: Robert Willomel d.1722 aged 84 years.

Small with round-faced winged angel, to: William Flower junior of Barnstone d.1718. 3. Small, shaped to John Bonser d.1799. 4. Large, rectangular, well-carved, with two skull and cross-bones in corners, to: John Marriott d.1765 aged 79 years. 5. Rectangular with two round-faced winged angels, divided vertically, to: John son of John Marriott by Martha his wife d.1723 in his 2nd year, and Robert son of above d.1723 aged 2 weeks. 6. Rectangular, plain, to: Martha Marriott d.1728 in her 32nd year. 7 and 8. Two limestone headstones, almost illegible, probably early C18, both with heavy relief carving of heads at top and garlands at sides. 9. Small, rectangular, to: William Marriott the son of John and Martha Marriott d.1726 an infant, also Samuel Marriott son of above d.1727 an infant. 10. Small, rectangular, to: Richard son of Richard Faulks d.1754. 11. Rectangular with ornate decoration, to: Elianor Marriott wife of Thomas Marriott d.1775. 12. Large, classical, with fine detail, to: Thomas Harrison son of George and Martha Harrison d.1776. 13. Tiny with round-faced winged angel, to: Katherine the wife of Thomas Moore d.March Ist 1723 aged 63 years. 14. Finely incised with shaped head, to: Elizabeth wife of Edward James d.1788. 15. Small, rectangular with round panel, to: William Bean d. May 7th 1744. 3. Small, shaped with delicate incised decoration, to: William son of George and Elizabeth Johnson d.1780. 4. Small, rectangular with moulded surround, to: John Morley son of John and Jane Morley d.1733 aged 6 years. 5. Tall, shaped with delicate incised decoration and with relief round panel with a woman, an anchor and a skeleton, to: Joseph Arnall d.1795 aged 26 years. 6. Tall, shaped, classical with delicate incised decoration with half-round relief panel, to: Samuel Arnall d.1806. 7. Smaller, rectangular, more simple detail, to: Mary daughter of William and Sarah Bateman d.1762 aged 25 years. 8. (Back to back with above). Small, rectangular, with moulded surround to Elizabeth daughter of Will. and Sarah Bateman d.1746 aged 12 years. 9, 10, 11 and 12. A group of 4 small limestone headstones probably early C18 but indecipherable. One is shaped with 2 relief heads and garlanded sides, another has an oval panel.

Tapering grave slab in Churchyard

Grade II

Grave slab. Probably mid C18. Limestone. A tapering slab raised in the centre, resembling a coffin lid. On the 'blunt' end is a relief cherubs head. Very eroded.
