Holbeck St WinifredFeatures and Fittings
Altar in Norman style by Harry Stubbings and the altar rail, both of stone, the latter with carved angels by Alice Meredith Williams. Choir stalls of plain, polished timber with minimal decoration. Single seat in choir south side of similar design to stalls but with carved, unpainted, misericord depicting the arms of the Dukes of Portland (Cavendish-Bentick): Quarterly: 1st and 4th, Azure a cross moline Argent (Bentinck); 2nd and 3rd, Sable three stags' heads cabossed Argent attired Or, a crescent for difference (Cavendish).
Pulpit of timber with carved panelled sides, Norman blind arches with carved capitals, the whole set on a stone plinth. The angel is dated 1931 and is by Alice Meredith Williams, other figures are by Thomas Good. Directly beneath the angel is an inscription on a shield that reads:

Lectern, a stone plinth topped by a fine bronze eagle by Walter Gilbert; a First World War memorial with Second World War names added on the south side. Font, a smoothed tub, perhaps early medieval, though heavily re-tooled; found nearby. A bronze lid with a figure and attached bowl by William Reid Dick, c.1930. Poor box by Meredith Williams, dated 1933. With a robed female figure on top, angels at her head; it is made to look like a medieval effigy. The box is inscribed:
Two carved bench ends frame the whole. Pews of similar design to the choir stalls, minimal decoration. Lighting fittings projecting from walls and arcades with curved brackets supporting bulbs. |
