Monuments and Memorials

Chancel

There are three monuments on the south wall of the chancel.

Tablet to Major Lord William Augustus Cavendish Bentinck (d.1902) by Eric Gill, 1929, erected 1939. The inscription reads:

TO the memory of Major
Lord WILLIAM AUGUSTUS
CAVENDISH-BENTINCK
D.S.O. 10th. Royal Hussars
Born 31 January, 1865, who
died very suddenly in the
Suez Canal on his way to
India, 4 November, 1903.
He served with distinction
throughout the war in
South Africa
1899-1902
He was loved & respected
by all ranks of his regiment
by his relations and by his
many friends.

William 6th Duke of Portland (d.1943) and wife Winifred. The inscription reads:

IN LOVING MEMORY OF
WILLIAM ARTHUR 6th DUKE OF PORTLAND K·G
born 28th December 1857 · Died 26th April 1943 and
WINIFRED ANNA DALLAS-YORKE HIS WIFE
Born 7th September 1863 · Died 30th July 1954

North Aisle

Brass also by Eric Gill (the text based on his stone relief at Garsington, Oxon), to Lady Ottoline Morrell (d.1938), dated 1939; with naturalistic flowers and sprays. The inscription reads:

WIFE OF PHILIP MORRELL AND
SISTER OF THE SIXTH DUKE OF
PORTLAND K.G. WHO DIED
APRIL 21ST 1938, IN

May her soul rest in peace.

On the east wall of the north aisle is a portrait medallion in a green marble frame to Lady Margaret Parente (d.1955). The inscription reads:

Nave

A brass plaque records the 6th Duke of Portland being made a Knight of the Garter on 15 March 1900.

The inscription reads:
