Nottingham
City Hospital Chapel

Archaeology

The chapel is constructed from red brick with some irregular Bulwell stonework, and has a cruciform plan. Architecturally it shows an eclectic mix of styles with Byzantine motifs (echoing the influence of Lethaby’s English Free Style). At the south-west angle is a low, circular tower with a grid of bell-openings, battlements and a slender copper spirelet.

The chapel was built over the period 1902-03; a service of dedication took place 13 August 1903.

Prior to the construction of the workhouse and the chapel the site was open farmland lying to the south of the Great Northern Railway, and probably belonging to Glebe Farm.
