City Hospital Chapel of St Luke

Nottingham Archdeaconry

Nottingham North Deanery

Introduction

The Hospital Church of St Luke, on the Nottingham City Hospital site, was built in 1902-3 to serve the Bagthorpe Workhouse. The workhouse was formerly opened on 18 March 1903 but it was another five months before the chapel was open for worship.

It was designed by the Nottingham architect, Arthur Marshall, in Arts and Crafts style and has been described as 'one of the most extraordinary hospital chapels anywhere.' The chapel closed in 1988 and has been used as a store since then.
