Shireoaks St LukeStonework
The church is built of Steetley Stone from the quarry about one mile away.
This is Magnesian limestone from the Permian era 250-290 million years old.
Various forms of the rock outcrop along a line from North Nottinghamshire to
Teeside and have been used for building purposes along its whole length.
The outcrops have various local names eg Steetley Stone. In this
locality most of the buildings built before the 1850s are built of this material.
After this date and with the development of Shireoaks Colliery, bricks became
the local building material.
