Skegby |
Detail | Hunter's horn |
On the north of the doorway is the effigy of a forester. Cox (1905) provides a detailed description:
'In the church of Skegby, near Mansfield, is the fourteenth-century stone effigy of one who must have been a forester-of-fee or some forest minister of Sherwood forest ... He wears a close-fitting cap, probably of leather; the tight-fitting sleeves of his inner jerkin show at the wrists through the short hanging sleeves of the outer garment, and over it he wears a tippet that had doubtless a cowl at the back. A hunter’s horn hangs at the right side, suspended from a strap over the left shoulder. The feet rest on a hound.'

The effigy of a woman is on the south side of the tower doorway.
The costume is 14th century, and she has a wimpled head-dress. On each side of the head are angels as supporters.
On the west wall of the nave, to the south of the tower door, is a stone monument to Thomas Morley (died 1786):
In Memory of THOMAS MORLEY 1768. Aged 87 Years. He Died July the 19th 1785 Aged 84 Years. [And I] heard a voice from heaven saying unto me Write From hence |
