Organ
An organ costing £160 was installed in 1873. This was a two-manual pipe organ with ‘swell’ and ‘great’ including associated stops. Minor cleaning and renovation work was undertaken in 1930. Air was pumped in by a blower until the mid-1940s when an electric blower was fitted. In 1954 a new console and pedal board were added by Bower and Dunn of Sheffield.
Mr Cecil Holland was organist and choirmaster from c.1910 until he lost a hand in a pit accident. Following a short period of respite he returned to play with a steel fitment in his arm. He retired in 1948.
In 1975 the organ was suffering from woodworm and in 1980 it was decided to replace it with a Norwich two-manual electronic organ with pedal board.
It cost £7,500. The money was raised by donations, special efforts, and an anonymous donor.
