Thoroton St HelenaStonework
The older parts of the church have dressings of skerry, which was widely used
for rubble wall material. It is very common in the Trent Valley and was probably
collected from the fields or shallow pits.
The spire has blue lias limestone from the lower Jurassic period which has
been used as a decorative feature found in many Nottinghamshire churches.
Lincolnshire limestone probably quarried at Ancaster has been used for window
and door mouldings. This Jurassic middle lias stone is hard and oolitic, and
suitable for carving.
