Tower
On the interior walls of the tower, above the kitchen, there are a number of monuments which have been relocated
from various parts of the church. None of them of outstanding merit.
The oldest, stone,
probably 18th Century now almost illegible. Face with wings at base.
Slate oblong c5'
x 2', with verse:
SACRED
to the Memory of JOHN TORR
who was instantly summon’d
from this transitory Life
Novr.13th, 1805,
in the 80th Year of his Age.
Reader, this stone soliceits not thy tears
Deem not this sudden stroke of heav’n sever
But justly bear upon thy breast imprest.
This awful lesson, which the dead suggest
Humbly useful, and without offence,
He fill’d the circle mark’d by providence
In age completing what his youth began
The noblest work, of God, an honest man.
Also ANN, Daughter of
the above JOHN TORR,
who died the 16th of June 1792
Aged 16 Years.
Likewise SARAH, Wife of the above
JOHN TORR, died 23rd Jany 1812
in the 66th Year of her Age.
Here lies a woman by all the good esteem’d
Because they prov’d her really what she seem’d
If thou wou’dst died as highly priz’d as she
Add to thy virtue, true sincerity. |

DISCREET, AND VIRTUOUS MOTHER.
SHE DIED MARCH 18, 1802.

In the center Isle lies Interred
The Body of JOHN SMITH, Esq.
Who died the 6th February 1776, Aged 71.
And of ELIZABETH his Wife,
Daughter of John Nevill, Esq.
Who died the 5th of April 1753, Aged 44.
Also Three of their Children,
John, Judith and John, who all died young.
This Marble was erected by their Daughter,

THIS TABLET HAS BEEN ERECTED BY HIS FRIENDS AND PATIENTS
TO RECORD THEIR SENSE OF THE LOSS SUSTAINED BY HIS DEATH AND
AS A TOKEN OF THEIR APPRECIATION OF HIS UPRIGHT CHARACTER, HIS
ZEAL AND ABILITY AS A PHYSICIAN AND SURGEON AND THE UNFAILING
KINDNESS WHICH HE SHEWED TO THE SICK POOR COMMITTED TO HIS CARE. |

This tablet is erected to her memory

This tablet is placed as a tribute of affection
and esteem from old friends and parishioners,
to one who for many years gave faithful
service in every good work in Basford. |
It should read Elizabeth Brumell Pitman.

The Kissing Stone
blessed by Pope Innocent IV (1243-54)
is embedded in the fabric of this porch |
Known also as a Pax it is actually in the
east door jamb. It is only 3.5 inches square, said to be made of porphyry,
and was passed around the congregation during Mass in the Pre-Reformation
period. It was re-discovered in 1859.
