Memorials in the Church

The memorials to the fallen of both world wars originally hung in the Colwick Community Centre, which from 1922 was the parish hall and doubled up as the church, until the present church building was opened in 1952. In 2009 Colwick Parish Council agreed to a request from St John’s Church to move both memorials to the church.

Outside the Church

Just outside the church gate is a new white stone obelisk-style memorial which again is dedicated to those who have been killed in all conflicts. It was erected in 2010. On the front (west side) it carries the well-known words from Laurence Binyon’s For the Fallen:

They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
We will remember them

On the left (north) side is the Kohima Epitaph:

When You Go Home,
Tell Them Of Us And Say
For Their Tomorrow,
We Gave Our Today

The right (south) side carries the words:

In Grateful Remembrance
of the people of Colwick
who gave their lives
in times of conflict
so others may live in peace.
