Westwood St Mary

Bells

The bell The bellcote

The single bell at St Mary’s is installed in small bellcote above the chancel arch. It is hung dead with an over the top chiming hammer.

An inscription reads:

BLESS THE DAY

TO THE GLORY OF GOD
THIS BELL WAS PRESENTED BY
MRS CHARLES HENRY OAKES
HOLLY HURST
RIDDINGS

1899

The newspaper report of the consecration of the church clarifies this somewhat, by reporting that the bell is the gift of Mrs C H Oakes, of Holly Hurst, Riddings.

There is a further inscription around the upper soundbow.

The newspaper report also gives the information that the bell weighs 1cwt 27lbs and cost £25 18s 2d. It was cast by Messrs John Taylor and Co of Loughborough.
