Glass

Writing in The Reliquary in 1876, Captain A.E. Lawson Lowe described ‘ancient glass in the windows of the parish church of Winkburn’. He noted the arms of the Burnell family as: ‘Argent, a lion rampant sable, within a bordure gules, charged with eight cinquefoils of the field.’

He also noted that the modern arms (in 1876) were: ‘Per fesse indented or and argent, a lion rampant sable, within a bordure gules, charged with eight plates. Crest. A bear's jambe erect and erased sable, holding in the paw a bunch of violets, slipped proper. Motto. " Caritas fructum habet."

No trace of this ancient heraldic glass now survives.

The only stained glass in the church is located in the chancel. The windows are in memory of Edward Valentine Pegge Burnell and three of his children: Hugh D'Arcy, Elizabeth Constance and Alice Mary Caroline.
