Memorial to D'Arcy Burnell (d. 1774)

On the north side of the east window there is a fine monument to D'Arcy Burnell who died in 1774. The inscription is flanked by decorative pilasters and above is a central pedestal decorated with a shield and surmounted by an urn. On the left side of the pedestal is a large figure of Death holding a torch and on the right side a large figure of Fame holding a portrait of Burnell. The sculptor is not known.

The inscription reads:

Sacred to the Memory of
D’ARCY BURNELL Esqr,
This monument is Erected in Testimony of her true Affection
by his Disconsolate Wife Mary, Sole Daughter & heir
of Robt Pakey of the City of Lincoln, M.D.
His virtues were those that gave a Lustre to Private life.
The Post of Honour is the Private Station
Which he truly Adornd.
As he was Exemplery in Every Relation in Life.
A Good Husband, Kind Master, and Stanch Friend;
and as A Son and Brother few ever did or will equal him,
He bore a Long Illness with true Christian Fortitude,
And Died June ye 1 1774
Aged 46 Years.
To the Inexpressible Grief & Affliction of his Affectionate & Disconsolate Wife.

O Death, ere thou hast Slain Another
Generous, Just, and Good as he
Time Shall throw a Dart at thee.

Memorial to William Burnell (d. 1609)

On the south side of the east window is a monument to William Burnell who died in 1609. Set into a recess is a large kneeling figure with sword. The inscription beneath is flanked by single decorative fluted brackets which support shaped urns and Doric columns with architrave over surmounted by further inscription and entablature surmounted by decorative shields.

The inscription on the entablature reads:

Quos Hymenaeus Hymen, lecto, bene iunget in uno,
Cur non hos tumulo condidit una dies
Heu deus ipse simul vetuit succumbere morti,
Dum volet ille sequar; chare marite vale.

 

Vive diu, fautesque mihi charissima quondam,
Nunc proli clarae vivito chara tuae
Teque tuosque, brevi faelices spero videre,
Mecum cantantes carmina grata deo.

The inscription below the effigy reads:

Here lies Willia[m] Burnell Esquire interr[e]d
on whom th[e] almighty blessings greate confer[e]d
the welth he was possest of did he spend
like a good steward, to a lawfull end
of smaller meanes a greater house none kept
So greate a tyme : few greate ones him outstept
he married of the Cordalls familie
Eizabeth by name : had progenie
Sonnes Willia[m], Edward, John Lawrance Thomas
Fraunces  & Robert : Seaven theire nu[m]ber was

 

Foure Daughters also all of them made spouses
before his death to men of worthy houses :
one to a knight to three squires thither three
to his greate comfort did he placed see
Elizabeth to Cave, knight : Dorothie
was married to an Esquire, Strelley :
To Markham an Esquire, Jane did he give
and unto Wombwell an Esquire Ollyve :
he left remaining after him his wife
and all these children when he left this life

Memorial to William Burnell (d. 1570)

On the south side of the sanctuary is the tomb chest of William Burnell who died in 1570. The slab has an inset carved figure with a shield above the head. The marginal inscription reads:

SEPTEMBRIS AO DMI 1570 AETATIS [SUAE] 56

On the eastern side of the slab is another inscription:

Memorial to Laurence Barrington Assheton Craven-Smith-Milnes (d. 1933)

On the south wall of the chancel, above the tomb chest is a monument to Laurence Barrington Assheton Craven-Smith-Milnes (1874-1933). The inscription states:

OF PERTH, WEST AUSTRALIA
AND WINKBURN NOTTS.

DIED MAY 12, 1933

Memorial to Harriet Gertrude Burnell (d. 1841)

A tablet on the south wall to Harriet Gertrude, daughter of Edward Valentine and Harriet Pegge Burnell, who died in 1841. The inscription reads:

SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF
HARRIET GERTRUDE ELDEST DAUGHTER OF
EDWARD VALENTINE AND HARRIET PEGGE BURNELL
WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE APRIL 14TH 1841,
AGED THREE YEARS.

“AND THEY BROUGHT YOUNG CHILDREN TO HIM, THAT HE
SHOULD TEACH THEM, AND HIS DISCIPLES REBUKED THOSE
THAT BROUGHT THEM.
BUT WHEN JESUS SAW IT, HE WAS MUCH DISPLEASED, AND SAID
UNTO THEM, SUFFER THE LITTLE CHILDREN TO COME UNTO ME
AND FORBID THEM NOT, FOR OF SUCH IS THE KINGDOM OF GOD.
VERILY I SAY UNTO YOU, WHOSOEVER SHALL NOT RECEIVE THE
KINGDOM OF GOD AS A LITTLE CHILD, HE SHALL NOT ENTER THEREIN.
AND HE TOOK THEM UP IN HIS ARMS, PUT HIS HANDS UPON

Memorial to Hugh D'Arcy Burnell (d. 1883)

On the north wall of the chancel is a brass tablet in memory of Hugh D'Arcy Burnell (1836-1883).

Floorstones

There are several worn floorstones in the chancel to members of the Burnell family:

Ellen, widow of William Burnell, died 22 November 1788 aged 90 years

William Burnell, died 15 July 1741 aged 53 years

William, son of William and Eleanor Burnell, died 19 July 1744 aged 14 years

Acton, son of William and Mary Burnell, buried 31 December 1687

Frances, daughter of Acton and Margaret Burnell, buried 2 June 1656

Alice, daughter of William and Mary Burnell, buried 26 September 1686

Elizabeth Finch (nee Burnell), died 15 October 1771 aged 39 years. The inscription reads:

October the Fifteenth 1771
Aged 39 Years

Mary Burnell, died 14 December 1740 aged 23 years

Ellen, daughter of William and Ellen Burnell, died 10 November 1754, aged 20 years

Elizabeth Cave, daughter of Norris Cave, died 15 January 1689 aged 66. The Latin inscription reads:

Nave

Memorial to Mary Pegge Burnell (d. 1815)

On the south wall of the nave is a memorial to Mary, wife of Peter Pegge Burnell, who died in 1815. The inscription states:
