Nave

Affixed to the west wall, to the north of the west door, is a stone plaque to Francis Sissons which reads:

AND A WORSHIPPER IN THIS CHURCH,
WHO DIED ON BOARD THE R.M.S. “AMBROSE.”

THIS TABLET WAS ERECTED BY HIS WIDOW AND CHILDREN.

Effigial slab

An incised effigial slab to a priest is set upright against the internal face of west wall of nave, at the south end. Greenhill (1976) describes the design as a priest wearing a dalmatic (a vestment worn by a deacon at Mass and by mitred clergy) along with the ordinary Mass vestments which is presumably an error; there is apparently another example at Sclayn, Namur, Belgium from c.1540. He dates the Worksop slab to 1499.

Aged thirty-one Years.

The tender Mother, and the virtuous Wife,
The pious Christian, and the Friend sincere,
All, shone conspicuous, in my Mary’s Life;
Whose Relicks find a peaceful Mansion here.

The Charms of Person, transient Graces! fade
And earthly Happiness, but dawns, and flies,
Yet by the Good, when Nature’s debt is paid,
The Soul immortal, into Bliss shall rise.

If ever blooming Youth the Stone survey,
Or if it meet a thoughtful Parent’s Eye,
Reflect and think, how short is Beauty’s day
Ah! Give to true Maternal-Worth, a Sigh!

Pause, serious Reader, Pause upon this Tomb,
And mark that early Age of thirty-one,
Behold! Th’untimely Night of Death may come
Before the Noon of human Life be gone.

South Transept

Thomas de Furnival Sir Thomas Neville Graffiti on Sir
Thomas
Neville's effigy
Joan Neville Graffiti on
Joan Neville's effigy

There are three mutilated alabaster figures in the south transept, heavily defaced with graffiti.

The earliest, from 1366, depicts the upper part of Thomas de Furnival who fought at Crécy and was nicknamed ‘the Hasty’. Gough’s description from 1786, quoted by Holland, still applies: ‘a knight, in a pointed helmet and frontlet, gorget of mail, on his surcoat a fess [a broad horizontal stripe] between six martlets [swallow-like birds]. His belt is studded, under his head a double cushion, with angels: the slab on which he lies is bordered with foliage’ (Holland, 1826, 114).

The other effigies date from 1406 and the early C15th, and represent Thomas and Joan Nevil, who was the sister of Lord Furnival. Again, their legs have been destroyed, although the lion which lay at Lord Nevil’s feet, still survives as a separate fragment. Gough’s description is as follows: ‘two alabaster figures, of a knight, in a pointed helmet, with a corolla round it, and a frontlet of oak leaves, plated armour, a saltier, with a martlet, for difference, on his surcoat, studded belt, his elbow … trefoil pattern, helmet under head, with a beast’s head for crest … at his right hand a lady, in a reticulated head-dress, slender face and neck, mantle and bodice, and plaited [pleated] petticoat, double cushion under her head, with angels.’ (Holland, 1826, 114-5).

Certainly the most touching memorial in the church is the small brass in front of the altar step, which reads:

HE WAS BORN JUNE 15 1823 + DIED MARCH 1824.
