Painted by Evelyn Gibbs (1905-91) and Claude Price in 1946. The mural depicts The Annunciation and is in two parts: the Virgin Mary on the left-hand side of the east window and the Angel Gabriel on the right. Gabriel is informing Mary that she will give birth to Jesus, the Son of God. The background scene shows Bilborough church and village with Wollaton Hall visible in the far distance.
In 1972 a suspended pine ceiling was installed in the chancel, concealing the upper sections of the mural. The lower parts were painted over with two layers of emulsion.
The 'Hidden Treasures' project funded the restoration of the mural in 2014 by a team managed by Tobit Curteis of Tobit Curteis Associates. Bianca Madden and Claudis Fiochetti worked on the conservation of the upper parts of the mural and Joy and Saskia Huning of Huning Decorations were the painters who re-created the lower sections.
The work won the the Society for the Protection of Ancient Building's John Betjeman Award 2015 for excellence in the repair of places of worship in UK and Ireland.
