Introduction

St John’s is a Victorian church, built in what was then a new village, just north of the Nottingham boundary. Stone built, it was designed in the popular neo-Gothic style of the 1840s, and served a new community which has subsequently become indistinguishable from the Mapperley-Sherwood Rise area which developed on either side of Mansfield Road in the course of the nineteenth century.
