Lowdham St MaryWar Memorial
There are two war memorials in the church. The larger brass one is original
to the church listing 59 names from Lowdham, Gunthorpe and
Caythorpe who died in the 1914-18 War. It has an extra plate to record the
four men who died in the Second War. Near these is the second memorial, an
inscribed alabaster, which came from Ton Lane Wesleyan Church recording thirteen
of their congregation who lost their lives in the First War. All but two of
the names are recorded on the St Mary’s roll as well. Presumably, the
two were not from Lowdham but attended the chapel from nearby villages. The
definitive list is generally regarded as that on the village memorial which
is on the green at the junction of the Southwell and Nottingham roads. The
Memorial in the church reads:
TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO
GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR US IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914-1918
THIS TABLET IS ERECTED BY FELLOW PARISHIONERS
