War Memorial

In addition to this outdoor memorial
there are also several interior memorials
recalling various conflicts.

The War Memorial at the southwest entrance to the churchyard was designed by Mr C G Hare. The monument is 29 feet high and surmounted by a crocheted cross with a bronze sword and was dedicated in 1922 to men who lost their lives in the Great War.

The cross is flanked by four piers. On the retaining walls are inscribed the names of the various parishes within Nottinghamshire, with the number of fallen against each. Thus the memorial remembers nearly 12,000 men of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire who lost their lives. It was raised by public subscription.

On the front of the column is the following dedication (with a prominent chi-rho between the two Latin words in the first line):

IN PACE
TO THE GLORY OF GOD IN
THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE OF ALL
WHO FROM THE CITY & COUNTY
GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR
COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR
1914-1918, NOTTINGHAM
AND NOTTINGHAMSHIRE
DEDICATE THIS CROSS.

At the base of the column on the church-ward side is a list of the parishes in Nottingham with the numbers who perished in the Great War:

Memorial to Nottinghamshire Firefighters

On the 9th May 2013 Princess Ann unveiled a memorial and laid a wreath in memory of Nottinghamshire firefighters and civil defence services who lost their lives. The princess met the chief fire officer Frank Swann, Sir John Peace, Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire and David Needham the chairman of the Firefighters Memorial Trust. The monument was blessed by the Bishop of Sherwood, the Right Reverend Tony Porter.

The memorial is in the form of an obelisk located in the north-western part of the churchyard. Most of the names listed died during the Second World War.

On the south face the inscription reads:

“Heroes
with
Grimy Faces”
       Winston Churchill.
