Chancel

In the chancel, two marble wall monuments on the north wall.

Westernmost:

IN MEMORY OF
JAMES BROWN ESQ
OF ROSSINGTON AND COPGROVE,
IN THE COUNTY OF YORK,
HE DIED APRIL 19TH 1877 AGED 63 YEARS
AND IS BURIED IN THE VAULT OF THIS CHURCH.

THE MEMORY OF THE JUST IS BLESSED. PROV 10, 7

It is signed by the mason A Welsh, Leeds.

Easternmost:

SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF

OF HART HILL GROVE NEAR LEEDS
BY WHOM THIS CHURCH WAS REBUILT
IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD
ONE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND FORTY FOUR
HE DIED ON THE 1ST OF JULY 1845
AND HIS REMAINS LIE AT CHAPEL ALLERTON
NEAR LEEDS

James Brown (d. 1845) commissioned the restoration of the church, and his son James (d. 1877) followed him.

It is signed Walsh and Lee, Leeds.

Nave

Memorials in the nave are:

North wall: a marble memorial to Rector J.W. Scarlett and his wife Barbara Isabella. He served the parish for 35 years and died 11 August 1910. At the top it bears a crest displaying a lion rampant. The inscription reads:

To the Glory of God
And in Affectionate Remembrance

JAMES WILLIAMS SCARLETT, M.A.
FOR 35 YEARS RECTOR OF THIS PARISH

BORN 4TH OCTOBER 1841
DIED 11TH AUGUST 1910.

DAUGHTER OF THE REVEREND JOHN LAWSON, M.A.
VICAR OF SEATON CAREW,
IN THE COUNTY OF DURHAM,
BORN 19TH JULY 1839,
DIED 2ND MARCH 1901,
BOTH LIE BURIED IN THIS CHURCHYARD.

“BLESSED ARE THE DEAD WHICH DIE IN THE LORD;
EVEN SO SAITH THE SPIRIT FOR THEY REST FROM
THEIR LABOURS.”

North wall has a brass plaque in memory of 2nd Lieutenant Henry Guy Hanning Thorp, who died in the First World War, 13 March 1915, of wounds received at Bailleul, where he is buried. The inscription reads:

THE ONLY CHILD OF HENRY BELL
AND EMILY GEORGINA THORP,
2ND LIEUT KING’S OWN YORKSHIRE
LIGHT INFANTRY + DIED OF WOUNDS
AT BAILLEUL AND IS THERE BURIED,
BORN 21ST MARCH 1895 DIED 13TH MARCH 1915.

A floor stone commemorating four sons of John Jackson who all died in infancy between the years 1711 and 1719.
