Incumbents of the Collegiate Church of St Mary prior to the foundation of the diocese

As we have seen [see History], the earliest development of the Minster church at Southwell as a collegiate foundation is very obscure. It is likely that from early Anglo-Saxon times the canons (later called prebendaries by virtue of their prebends which consisted of lands and rents derived from parishes mainly in Nottinghamshire), had lived a communal life. But is only from the mid eleventh century, thanks to the efforts of three successive archbishops (Aelfric Puttoc, Cynesige and Ealdred) that a little more can be discovered about this. They provided a refectory, dormitory, bells and other facilities alongside a newly rebuilt Minster. In addition, Archbishop Ealdred  personally purchased lands to endow the Minster, some of which he, or his successor Thomas of Bayeux, probably used to establish individual prebends since Domesday Book (1086) suggests that they were by then to be found at (North) Muskham, Normanton, Norwell Overhall and Woodborough. Other early prebends almost certainly included Norwell Palishall, Oxton I and II, and Sacrista. Clergy, usually already in the domestic service of the archbishop, could be rewarded with a prebend which allowed them to live independently.  By the early twelfth century there may have been as many as eight prebendaries at Southwell, forming the governing body, the Chapter. Henry I encouraged this development by permitting Archbishop Thurstan to found two more prebends at Dunham and Beckingham and Leverton, 1119 x 1133, and his successors not only approved further foundations but put forward their own candidates like Henry II who nominated his clerk Roger as the first prebendary of Halloughton c. 1162. By then the Chapter had its own seal, evidence of its legal identity. A generation later, Archbishop Geoffrey Plantagenet split up Norwell Overhall to form a third Norwell prebend, Tertia Pars (1191 x 1194), and Muskham to form North and South Muskham prebends c 1200, while Rampton was established by lay patrons, the Mallouel family at much the same period. Finally in 1290-1, Archbishop Le Romayne formed a prebend at Eaton and split North Leverton off from Beckingham so that the Chapter was made up of 16 prebends, the figure at which it would remain until its final dissolution in 1840-1.Individuals were normally appointed by the archbishop of York, but pressure could be exerted on him both by the king and pope, while during vacancies disputes often arose between the latter over appointments. Most continued in office until they resigned or died. Many also both in the Middle Ages and after the Reformation simultaneously held other prebends in other churches. It was normal to resign a prebend when promoted to a higher preferment such as a bishopric, though licences could be obtained to hold ‘incompatible benefices’ in plurality.

For the whole period of the existence of the chapter, apart from a brief period in the early thirteenth century when there may have been a dean, the archbishop never appointed a Chief Prebendary: the Chapter generally governed itself free from outside control, though it and individual prebendaries could be summoned to answer for their actions in the archbishop of York’s own court. Under the statutes promulgated by Queen Elizabeth I in 1585, however, the office of Vicar- General was created, whereby one of the canons was elected by his peers to exercise the ecclesiastical jurisdiction belonging to the chapter.

(That job-title had a somewhat dubious provenance, Thomas Cromwell having been so appointed in 1535 in order to survey all the country’s churches, monasteries and clergy and tax them more effectively).

The English Clergy database has also provided some evidence from the Reformation onwards but is patchy. For the earliest prebendaries use has also been made of research carried out for the edition of the White Book of Southwell (Pipe Roll Society, 2 vols. 2018).

Some attempt has been made to regularise style in these lists but notes and comments which appear in the source documents have been included where appropriate.

Although the names of some canons are known from the mid-twelfth century onwards, in most cases it is not until the thirteenth century that they can be associated with named prebends. The Chapter was suspended by Henry VIII between 1540-43, and abolished between 1649-60, before the final dissolution of the Collegiate Church of St Mary at Southwell by Act of Parliament (The Dean and Chapter Act, 1840) in 1841. However incumbent prebendaries were allowed to keep their titles, and their income, until they died. Thomas Henry Shepherd, Prebendary of Beckingham, was the last member of the old chapter to die in 1873 and with his death the ancient system of governance came to an end.

11. Holders of the Prebend of Oxton Prima Pars

The prebendal lists for Oxton Prima Pars and Oxton Secunda Pars are particularly problematic, especially for the medieval period since nominations seldom make clear to which of the two prebends the candidate is being preferred. The lists offered here should thus be considered very provisional. They differ markedly from those inscribed on boards in Oxton church.

Governance of Southwell Minster between 1841 and 1884

Once the Dean and Chapter Act had come into force and the old chapter had been dissolved, Southwell reverted in effect to the status of a parish church and came under the surveillance of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, established in 1837. The parish was also moved from the Diocese of York to the Diocese of Lincoln. John Thomas Becher, appointed as Vicar General in 1830, had to supervise the winding-up of the former chapter and its consequences. Becher continued to have a strong influence on the affairs of the church until his death in 1848. He was a dominant figure in the local community for much of the first half of the 19th century and did not always feel the need to seek permission from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners (or from anyone else) to pursue his own resolve.

Becher often clashed with George Wilkins, appointed Archdeacon of Nottingham in 1832. Wilkins also had a supervisory role at Southwell and was a strong character. After the death of Becher in 1848, Wilkins assumed full leadership at Southwell and continued until his death in 1865.

He was succeeded as Archdeacon of Nottingham and as Rector of Southwell by his son, John Murray Wilkins, who died in 1881. Five years before the death of J M Wilkins, a group of Southwell residents wrote to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners to complain about the condition of the Minster and to assert that Wilkins had become 'too physically and mentally incapacitated to provide for our present urgent necessity'. Eventually, James John Trebeck, assistant curate, who had been entrusted with most of the duties for several years previously, was appointed as rector. When the Minster was created a Cathedral in 1884, Trebeck became sub-Dean. Although George Ridding, the first Bishop of Southwell, was de jure Dean, he delegated his cathedral functions to Trebeck.
