The memorial was designed by W D Caroe in 1919 to commemorate those killed in the First World War and is on the east wall of the south transept.

The upper section lists the names of those who perished in the First World War. There are four panels, here numbered 1 to 4 from left to right.

Second World War

Underneath is another memorial to those who fell in the Second World War. The upper and lower portions of the First World War memorial were separated and a new panel inserted between them to carry the names of those who fell in the Second World War. As always with combined war memorials, it is striking how the number of WWI names greatly outnumber those of WWII.

Research by the Southwell Branch of the Royal British Legion revealed the fact that 17 of the Southwell servicemen who had been killed in the First World War and one serviceman who had lost his life in the Second World War had not had their names recorded on the war memorial in the minster.

In 2011, two new hinged boards carrying matching lettering were added and they now display the missing names as follows:
