Church

Church. C14 with C18 and C19 alterations. Mainly thinly-coursed rubble with quoins, with some deeply-coursed later work. Lead roofs except slate north aisle roof and tower roof. Two-bay nave with C19 north aisle, lean-to south aisle with porch, 2-bay chancel, west tower. The south aisle has a single large C18 cambered-headed window to its west, south and east sides, each with leaded glazing. 2-light chancel windows (north and south) with square heads and Perpendicular tracery and an arched doorway on the south side. 3-light C19, arched, east window with intersecting tracery. The west tower has an C18 window as south aisle. The tower has a late C19 brick upper part with small lancets and a hipped slate roof. Interior: C14, 2-bay, double-chamfered south arcade. C19, 2-bay north arcade. Georgian furnishings: raking rear gallery with panelled front supported on a central brick pier which goes through to the roof and is panelled; combined,panelled pulpit and reading desk; chancel rail with slender turned balusters; panelled box pews to south and squire's pew. Bench with poppyhead. Octagonal font with inscription on the panels: T.S.R.D. 1.6.6.2. This may be a re-carved medieval font. N Pevsner. The Buildings of England, 1979.

Churchyard Wall

Churchyard perimeter wall. Probably C18. Blue Lias coursed rubble with flag coping. Small gateway on east side with small returns to steps. Later gateway in south-west corner. The wall is up to 2 metres high and runs continuously around all four sides of the church.

Chest Tombs and Headstone

Two chest tombs and one headstone. 1. Gritstone chest tomb with square fluted corner strips, flat top and raised oval panel in west end, to: Joseph Marriott jnr. d.1801. Signed S. Squires. 2. Similar to above with oval panels, to: Joseph Marriott and Mary his wife d.1790 aged 66, and 1808 aged 76. Also Hannah and Elizabeth, their daughter d.1744 and 1808. 3. Slate headstone with ornamental lettering to Henry Boot d.1728. At the bottom is inscribed 'Mr Francis Boot erected this stone at his own charge'.

Group of Headstones

Group of 13 headstones. C18 and early C19. Slate: 1. Rectangular with ornamental scrollwork, to: Sarah wife of John Marriott d.1760. 2. Large, rectangular, with ornamental foliage and flowers, to: Richard Porter d.1815. 3. Shaped, classical with scrolled decoration, to: Richd. Porter d.1798 aged 92 years. Signed "Wood". 4. Rectangular, classical, to: Mary wife of Richard Porter d.1783. 5. Shaped with classical decoration, to: John Skinner d.1803 aged 73 years. 6. Shaped with an oval panel with radiating rays, to: Elizabeth wife of John Skinner d.1796. 7. Shaped with ornamental scrollwork, to: Mary, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Brett d.1791 aged 17 years. 8. Tall, shaped with simple decoration, to: Elizabeth daughter of William and Hannah Smith d.1794 aged 19 years. 9. Simple decoration, to: Wm. Smith d.1782. 10. Wide, shaped with scroll decoration with vases and 2 shield-like panels, to: William Ridge d.1798 and Elizabeth relict of William Ridge d.1799. Signed "Wood". 11. (Against the east wall). Rectangular with scrolled decoration. to: Richard son of Richard and Elizabeth Birkitt d.1753. Signed 'Sparrow'. v 12. Facing west, with a round-faced winged angel, to: William Spybye d.1723 Jan 1(7?). 13. Facing west. Similar to above, to: Mary wife of William Spybye d.1723 April 26.
