After World War I the PCC began to discuss the design of a suitable War Memorial. Various suggestions were considered including a stone cross in the churchyard, a Book of Remembrance set on an oak table in the baptistery (the vicar’s choice), and a triptych. The memorial eventually selected to commemorate the fallen of World War I was an oak panel with a pediment and sill.
The names of 108 men were listed in alphabetical order in five columns. No Christian names, regiment or service details or honours were included. Installation did not take place until 1923 when Colonel Clifton officiated at the opening ceremony.
The inscription reads:
ST. FAITH’S PARISH NORTH WILFORD
TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN PROUD MEMORY OF THE GALLANT MEN FROM
THIS PARISH AND CONGREGATION WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918.

World War II (1939-1945)
After the end of World War II the same long process of debate took place regarding the nature of a suitable memorial for those who did not return. It was not until 1949 that it was decided to add two hinged panels, one on each side of the World War I memorial. When closed the outer face of the doors can be seen to have carved panels, each panel with three trefoil headed blind arches surmounted by blind tracery.
The cost of the memorial was £80 plus the cost of carving the names, which is not recorded in the Church records.
On the rear of the left door the inscription reads:
Those whose names are inscribed
on the opposite panel
laid down their lives in the
World War of 1939- 1945 |
On the rear of the right door:
