Key to Windows

1A window of plan glass, with rectangular leading and a semi-circular head.

2The window can be divided into three sections:

Upper Section

Semi-circular head with border containing fish and flowers (yellow); nine panels containing yellow flowers all radiating from a pelican in her piety, all in front of sun rays.

Mid Section

The main section features four Corinthian style columns on pedestals which divide the central section into 3 parts.

The left and right margins each contain 16 square panel with 12 in each containing the same floral design. The other 4 panels in each contain instruments of the passion (crossed whips; column with lance and sponge on a hyssop branch; cross with crown of thorns and scroll inscribed with 'INRI'; mallet and tongs.

The central light contains a figure of Christ, based on the painting Light of the World by Holman Hunt, and including the inscription:

I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
Lower Section

The left and right panels each contain a coat of arms within a wreath (on the left those of St Oswald and on the right of the Diocese of Southwell). The central panel reads:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY
OF ANTHONY WINTER BAILEY, FOR
34 YEARS VICAR OF THIS PARISH, WHO
DIED 12TH APRIL 1908. THIS WINDOW IS
PLACED HERE BY HIS WIDOW AND CHILDREN.

The faculty for this window was granted in 1909.

3Window behind organ. A simple rectangular window, very inaccessible.

4The east window is of four main lights, plus some stained glass in the tracery

Depicted in the main lights are four scenes of the Passion of Christ:

Far left
Christ carrying his cross, with the Virgin Mary kneeling as Jesus passes. Below is the inscription:
HE BEARING HIS CROSS WENT FORTH
Middle left
The crucificion with, at the foot of the cross, the Virgin Mary, St John and St Mary Magdalene (kneeling). The inscription reads:
BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD
Middle right
Jesus being taken down from the cross. There is an inscription:
HE CAME AND TOOK THE BODY OF JESUS
Far right
The body of Jesus being placed in the tomb. The inscription reads:
THERE LAID THEY JESUS

All four scenes are surmounted by gothic canopies, and there are four identical decorative panels below.

In the tracery, between an Alpha and Omega, is a figure of the risen Christ in triumph with a banner. To the left are a male and female saint (probably the Virgin Mary and St John), and to the right an angel proclaiming “ALLELUIA”.

Across all four panels at the bottom are the words:

THIS WINDOW IS A TRIBUTE OF GRATEFUL AFFECTION FROM ARTHUR BROMLEY IN MEMORY OF HIS MOTHER

By repute this window was designed by Lady Bromley.

5A window of three main lights, depicting St Matthew and St Mark in the side panels (with Latin versions of their names beneath) with Christ in the centre. Under the figure of Christ is the inscription:

the word was made flesh

All the lettering is in gothic script.

Above each figure is a foliate decoration, and below each a star-shaped decoration centring on an IHS, with grape vines in the background.

Two angels are in the tracery.
