Monuments and Memorials

On the north wall of the chancel is an elaborate memorial for John Whetham, who died in 1781, and for his wife Elizabeth, who died in 1807. The inscription reads:

Sacred to the Memory
of John Whetham Esq. of Kirklington
in this County, (Son & Heir of Lieut Gen.
Thomas Whetham, and Mary Daughter of
Edward Thompson Esq of Marston in Yorkshire
this Marble URN was Erected with the deepest Regret
by his Widow Elizabeth Whetham; as a Testimony of
her Sincere Affection; He departed this Life the 29th
day of August 1781;Aged 49. In the same Vault,
near this Marble, lies their only Child
Thos Willm Whetham who died an Infant, June 1772
And now also MRS Eliz. Whetham Daur of Col.
Evelyn Chadwick
, and Sister & Coheir of
James Mansfield Chadwick Esq
who died Dec. 16 1807,
AGED 66.

 

Set low down in the same wall is a grave-marker for John Augustine Finch, rector of Hockerton from 1750 to his death in 1780. The inscription reads:

Under
this Marble
Rests the Body of
John Augustine Finch
Rector of this Parish
who died December 8th
MDCCLXXX.
Aged 60.
