Georgiana, Duchess of Newcastle (1789-1822)

By 1822 the 4th Duke’s wife, Georgiana, had eleven surviving children and was pregnant again. In May of that year their eldest daughter, Anna Maria, died aged 14. In September Georgiana gave birth to twins. The girl was stillborn and although at first both mother and son seemed well both died a few days later.

In May 1822 the Duke commissioned the sculptor, Richard Westmacott, to take a cast of Anna Maria's face with the intention of making 'a bust or statue of it.' Following the death of the Duchess in September of that year the Duke approached Westmacott for a suitable monument to his wife. In 1825 the Duke attended the Royal Academy exhibition at Somerset House in London. Westmacott had contributed a Madonna and Child which he thought might provide an appropriate monument to Georgiana. The Duke, however, had other ideas:

‘I shall prefer an alto-relievo and I have given him the idea, it is to be my dear child Anna Maria borne in a cloud, ready to receive my beloved and ever lamented wife, who looks towards her having in each arm an infant who are preparing to advance to Heaven.’

The monument was installed at the mausoleum in December 1839.

The inscription reads:

GEORGIANA ELIZABETH DUCHESS OF NEWCASTLE,
BORN JUNE 1ST 1789, DIED SEPTEMBER 26TH 1822.

ESTEEMED AND LAMENTED BY ALL WHO APPRECIATE EXCELLENCE FLOWING FROM THE PUREST AND NOBLEST QUALITIES OF THE HEART AND MIND,
AND ILLUSTRATED BY THE UNREMITTING PRACTICE OF EVERY SOCIAL AND DOMESTIC VIRTUE.

SHE GAVE BIRTH TO FOURTEEN CHILDREN, TEN OF WHOM LIVED TO DEPLORE THE BEREAVEMENT OF AN INCOMPARABLE MOTHER.
OF THE OTHERS, ANNA MARIA PRECEEDED HER BY A FEW MONTHS, AND IT IS HUMBLY HOPED LED THE WAY TO REGIONS OF ETERNAL BLISS.
TWO INFANTS WERE CARRIED WITH THEIR PARENT TO THE GRAVE.

IN PIOUS AFFECTION AND LOVING GRATITUDE HER WIDOWED HUSBAND ERECTED THIS MONUMENT TO HER MEMORY.

Henry Pelham Fiennes Pelham-Clinton, 4th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne (1785-1851)

In stark contrast to the classicism of Georgina’s monument, the one commemorating her husband (and the 5th and 6th Dukes of Newcastle), has a medieval flavour.

It was described by Pevsner (1979) as ‘two sentimental young mediaeval pages and an ogee arch ... a perfect example of the taste of the 1851 exhibition at its chastest.’

The inscription reads:

HENRY PELHAM,
FOURTH DUKE OF NEWCASTLE,
K.G.
BORN 30TH JANUARY 1785,
DIED 12TH JANUARY 1851.

HENRY PELHAM, FIFTH DUKE OF NEWCASTLE,
K.G.

DIED 18TH OCTOBER 1864.

HENRY PELHAM ALEXANDER.
SIXTH DUKE OF NEWCASTLE.
BORN 25TH JANUARY 1834,
DIED 22ND FEBRUARY 1879.

According to an information notice in the mausoleum there was a plaque beneath the monument that has been removed. It read:

HENRY WILLIAM PELHAM CLINTON
BORN 21 OCTOBER 1860
DIED 18 DECEMBER 1927

SECOND SON OF
LORD CHARLES PELHAM CLINTON

AND A GRANDSON OF THE 4TH DUKE OF NEWCASTLE.

The monument is made of magnesian limestone and conservation work was carried out on it in 1995 and 2004.
