Nottingham St Saviour

Features and Fittings

Font

Currently the font is located in the north-east corner of the sanctuary. It has an octagonal base resting on an octagonal shaft which is decorated with an incised round on each face. The bowl is also octagonal with each face showing a deep carved trefoil enclosing three flowers. An eight-sided pyramidal cover of carved oak rests on the bowl. Documents record that the font was the gift of Mr Henry Knight in 1897.

The font was probably relocated in 1999 as part of the church’s re-ordering to accommodate the play area and community activities.

A brass plaque on the oak cover reads:

A.M.D.G.
THE GIFT OF
MABEL ELLEN PARKER & FRIENDS.
EPIPHANY, 1897.

Pulpit

Front of the
pulpit
Rear of the
pulpit

Set just in front of the chancel arch on the south side of the nave is a substantial, round, light-coloured marble pulpit. Access is via three curved stone steps.

On the front of the pulpit is a book rest with leaf carving underneath set around a crucifix and letters 'I H S'.

The pulpit is recorded as a gift but the date of its installation and the name of the donor is not mentioned.

Choir stalls

The south choir stalls

On each side of the chancel there are two rows of oak choir stalls. They were given in memory of the late Alderman G. Blackburn and installed in 1913. They were dedicated by the Bishop of Derby.

The book rest on the front stalls has polished oak panels with tracery within an arch. The second rows have seats and backrest which are higher, they also have panelled carvings but the lower parts have vertical planking.

Records show that the manufacturer was James & Wilkins of Birmingham.

Reredos

Altar and reredos Detail of reredos

The reredos is similar in style to the choir stalls but more ornate. Set below the east window it has five upper panels, three directly over the altar and one other each side over another panel. The upper centre panel is higher than the other panels and all are topped with a carved pediment. At each end of the reredos is a square narrow wooden tower. To complete the installation, panelling slightly lower than the reredos and with less carving continues to each corner of the sanctuary. The style of the altar is also of the same style but has narrower panels and more carving.

Like the choir stalls, the reredos was dedicated by the Bishop of Derby in 1913 and was also gift of the Blackburn family in remembrance of their father Alderman G. Blackburn. It is therefore most likely that it was produced by the same maker. Both were part of a remodelling of the east end carried out in 1913 by Thomas Wright.

A brass plaque on the reredos states:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD
and in loving memory of
ALDERMAN G. BLACKBURN, J.P.,
for 14 years Churchwarden
and his sons
BENJAMIN FIELDING and ALFRED JAMES.

This REREDOS and PANELLING are erected
by LIEUT. COL. W.H. BLACKBURN and his
brother R. BLACKBURN, Sep. 28, 1913.

Oak Clergy chairs

An identical pair of carved oak chairs are extant in the sanctuary, one on each side the reredos. They have caved panel backs surmounted by a rail with seven incised quatrefoils supporting a carved pediment. Curved arms complete the design.

Communion rail

A hinged moulded oak rail supported by brass brackets. Each bracket has a tubular column with a brass plinth at the bottom and two curled brass brackets secured by bolts at the top. A flat strip of brass sits on the brackets to which the communion rail is secured by screws.

Lectern

The lectern is located behind the Communion rail on the south side of the sanctuary. It comprises a turned brass shaft and base terminated by a brass globe supporting an eagle fronted book rest.

The inscription on the base reads:

To the Glory of God
AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF
JOHN RICE,
WHO ENTERED INTO REST, JANUARY 15TH 1900.
DEDICATED BY HIS CHILDREN.

Bible stand

A brass bible stand on the altar has an inscription that reads:

In Memory of Maria Anderson
ST OLAVES, WEST BRIDGFORD
DIED JANY 31ST 1895.
From one who dearly loved her.

West wall

Looking south-west Looking north-east

Blind arcading along the west wall of the nave contains texts from the Ten Commandments as well as the Lord's Prayer.

A plaque attached to the arcading states:

THE COMMANDMENTS TABLETS ARE GIVEN
TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF
LILY WHITEHOUSE AND CAROLINE E. TAYLOR
1978

Seating

A photograph from c.1964 shows the nave seating to be rows of wooden pews. Currently the nave is used for other purposes and is furnished with modern chairs and tables.
