War Memorial

The War memorial is on the north wall of the church immediately opposite the south door. It is a large black slab with a white marble memorial mounted on it. It has columns on either side and a cross in a short column at the top. All of the lettering is in black. The inscription reads:

The memorial was unveiled by Lady Carnarvon on 18 July 1920 and dedicated by the rector, the Rev G.E. Eaton. A report appeared in the Mansfield Advertiser, 23 July 1920: ‘A marble tablet erected by public subscription at Teversal Parish Church was unveiled by Lady Carnarvon, and dedicated by the Revd G.E. Eaton (Rector) on Sunday evening in the presence of a large assembly, including discharged soldiers and the relatives of the men.’

Below the memorial is a shelf and below that are further memorials set into the panelling. Immediately below the shelf is a narrow piece of wood (114 cm by 5 cm) with white lettering which reads:

IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THE SERVICE AND SACRIFICE OF THE FOLLOWING

MEMBERS OF HIS MAJESTY’S FORCES WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR OF 1939- 1945

Below this are four wooden plaques, each measuring 15.5 cm by 17 cm. The name on each one is in red, the rest of the lettering in white. From left to right they read as follows:

On the north wall of the chancel is a list, printed on paper, of all the men of Teversal who served during World War I. At the bottom it says that the list is the result of research by Teversal Heritage Group, using The St Katherine’s Parish Magazine 1914-1917, the Absent Voters List of 1918 and other sources.
