Hatchments
There are eight hatchments hung in Tollerton church, dating from 1770 to 1875.
Nave
On the north arcade wall (west end) is the hatchment of Mrs Susanna Neale (died 1811). She was the wife of the Lord of the Manor, Pendock Neale (later Pendock Barry), who died in 1833 and the daughter of the Reverend Thomas Neale, Thimbleby, Lincolnshire.
On the north arcade wall (east end) is the hatchment of Reverend John Pendock Neale 1769-1816, Rector of Tollerton and cousin of the Lord of the Manor.
Above the chancel arch is the hatchment of Pendock Barry (formerly Pendock Neale), 1751-1833. Lord of the Manor who assumed the name and arms of Barry after his wife, Susannah’s death.
On the south arcade wall (east end) is the hatchment of Pendock Barry Barry (1783-1847), Lord of the Manor. He was the son of Pendock Neale, later Barry and Susanna. This is the hatchment of a bachelor. The skull indicates he was the last of his line.
On the south arcade wall (west end) is the hatchment of Mrs Susannah Davies, Lady of the Manor 1847-1872.
Mrs Davies bought the estate after Pendock Barry’s death in 1847. Her tomb is in the churchyard and this is the last hatchment known to have been painted when a death occurred at Tollerton Hall or Rectory.
Squire's Pew
On the west wall is the hatchment of Pendock Neale (1728-1773), Lord of the Manor of Tollerton. This is the oldest example in the church and depicts the arms of Pendock and Barry joined with those of Harriot Elliot, his wife.
On the west wall is the hatchment of Rev. John Neale (1729-1781), Rector of Tollerton, and brother of Pendock Neale.
On the north wall is the hatchment of Mrs Elizabeth Neale (1713-1795), widow of the Rev. John Neale.
They were the parents of Pendock Neale (later Barry), who succeeded his uncle as Lord of the Manor in 1773.
