Outdoor War Memorial

The main World War I Memorial is mounted on a wall to the right of the main gate to the churchyard, topped with an iron cross, and constructed from stones re-used after the 1869 Restoration as an inscription states:

These stones
were cut in the XIIIth century by the builders of this church

A bronze plaque is inscribed:

Indoor Memorials

Inside the church on the south wall of the aisle next to the font, there are two framed illuminated scrolls listing all the men and women of Caunton who served in the two World Wars.

The first is hand-written and annotated by the Revd John Tinkler, on a poster designed for this purpose inscribed at the head:

Alexander Antcliffe, Machine Gun Section, 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment Killed in Northern France by the bursting of a shell on March 3rd 1916. R.I.P.

Francis Arthur Wombwell, 20th Hussars (Lance Corporal). Died of wounds received in action in France on April 3rd, 1918.

George Samuel Moody, 1st Life Guards (Corporal?). Killed on Sunday Night May 19th, 1918, during a German air raid on the camp at the base in France while defending nurses & wounded.

The provenance of the second illuminated scroll, placed in the church in 1995, is explained by the dedication at the foot:

This list was compiled by the churchwardens & Parochial Church Council in collaboration with Caunton Local History Society & Caunton Parish Council. It was dedicated as a celebration of 50 years peace on 16th July 1995. The year in which both VE & VJ days were commemorated.
