Recess for wall tomb | Effigy | Engraving of the tomb of Sir John de Caltoft from Thoroton (1677) |
12Recess for a wall-tomb with square jambs surmounted by an arch. Above the arch are Babington’s arms carved on a stone shield. Thoroton (1677) says it contained an alabaster slab inscribed with the name of John Babington who died in 1409.
A mutilated effigy of a cross-legged knight has been placed in the recess. It is thought to be the effigy of Sir John de Caltoft, illustrated in Thoroton's Antiquities of Nottinghamshire (1677), which was originally located in the north transept and thrown out into the churchyard when the transepts were demolished in 1778.
1Medieval cross slab to John de Stanford, rector of East Bridgford 1349-75. 'H.S. 1628' (for Henry Spurre, rector 1585-1628) is also incised into the slab. (See Archaeology section for further details):
