South Leverton All Saints

Bells

The bells
and bellframe

The church has a ring of three bells which are unique in being a complete ring by Augustine Bowler of Lincoln. There is no church elsewhere with more than one bell by him. George Dawson on his visit in December 1971 states that it is clear he learnt his trade in Nottingham for upon his departure he took discarded medieval stamps from the Oldfield foundry.

Details of the bells are as follows:

  Inscription Size Weight
1

PAX AVDIENIEBVS ME 1634

34" c7cwt
2

AUGUSTINE BOWLER ME FECIT 1634

36¼" c8½cwt
3

CVM VOCO AD TEMPLVM VENITE 1634

The bells are hung in a wooden frame for three bells with wooden headstocks and plain bearings. The bells are not now in use.
