One bell (no 11) was originally given in 1544 by Margery Doubleday, a washerwoman who had come into money, to be rung every working day at 4am to awake the parish’s washerwomen; funds were also left for the sexton to ring the bell. (This bell was recast in 1771.)
The sharp second bell was paid for by public subscription in memory of the ministry of Angus and Katherine Inglis at St Peter’s and the service of David Stainsby (fifty years a bell ringer and 30 years Master at St Peter’s).
The bells are set in a steel bellframe.
Other details, including inscriptions on each bell, are in Ringing World; report reproduced and attached to the schedule of documents in the Terrier. Full description by George A. Dawson.
Also in possesion of the church are:
1 set of nineteen handbells in oak case.
1 set of twelve handbells.
