Willoughby-on-the-Wolds St Mary and All SaintsBells
The belfry houses a steel, low-sided bell frame containing a ring of six bells.
Prior to 1856, there was a ring of four bells (411). These are listed as follows:
- THOMAS LINES RICHARD CROSS CHURCHWARDENS HEDDERLY FOUNDER
- IESUS BE OVR SPEDE 1595
- THOMAS LINE WM MAPLES C.W. 1750 THOMAS HEDDERLY FOUNDER.
- GLORY BE TO GOD ON HIGH THO HEMSLEY WILLIAM HOLLAND WARDENS 1656.
Stretton noted the bells in the wrong order for Taylor’s records indicate the tenor was the 1595 bell, which had badge [h0] on it. It weighed 4.0.17 and was 29 inches in diameter. The third bell, probably bell number 4 above was 27.5 inches in diameter.
Historically there were:
1552: iij belles in the stepull and a lyttyll Sanctus bell.
1740: 4 bells.
1781: Terrier: four bells.
The new five left Loughborough on 31st March 1856 and were rung by the Wymeswold ringers on Friday 16th May 1856.
The western tower and spire now contains a ring of six bells.
